A modern conservatory glass roof lets in plenty of natural light and loses far less heat than older roofs. It uses performance glass such as double or triple glazing, solar control glass and self-cleaning glass. The right glass keeps your conservatory comfortable all year round, can help lower your energy bills and is easy to look after.

So, is a glass roof still worth it? Below, we look at how roof glass has changed, the options available, how glass compares with a solid roof and how to look after your new roof.

How conservatory glass has evolved

Single panels and polycarbonate

If your conservatory is a few decades old, it may well have single-glazed panels or a polycarbonate (plastic sheet) roof. These let in plenty of light but aren’t very good at keeping heat in, so the room can feel chilly in winter and too warm in summer. Polycarbonate can also be quite noisy in heavy rain.

The move to double glazing

Double glazing brought a big step forward in comfort. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that swapping single-glazed windows for energy-efficient double glazing can save around £85 a year on energy bills. The same thinking applies to your roof, where the right glass can make a real difference.

Today’s glass roofs

The Ultraframe glass conservatory roofs we install are made to order, designed to stay watertight and built to cope with strong wind and snow. Every roof also comes with a 10-year product guarantee as standard.

Types of performance glass for a conservatory glass roof

Here are the main types of roof glass and what they could mean for you day to day.

Solar control glass

Love the light but not the glare? Solar control glass reflects some of the sun’s heat, so your conservatory stays cooler on bright days. It also filters out up to 90% of harmful UV rays. It’s a particularly good choice for south-facing conservatories, which can overheat in summer.

Self-cleaning glass

Cleaning a conservatory roof isn’t anyone’s favourite job. Self-cleaning glass, available on most of our glazing options, has a special coating that helps rainwater wash dirt away, so you’ll need to do it less often.

Triple glazing

Triple glazing is more of an investment, but its extra pane of glass keeps in even more heat, helping to lower your heating bills further. It also reduces outside noise, making it perfect if you live in a busy area or near a busy road.

Glass roof vs solid roof: which is the right conservatory roof for you?

Do you want as much daylight as possible, or a cosy room you can use on the coldest evenings? The right choice depends on how you plan to use the space.

Is a glass roof warm enough to use all year round?

Yes, with today’s performance glass, a glass roof can keep your conservatory comfortable all year round. Double glazing, solar control glass and optional triple glazing hold in warmth during winter and stop the room overheating in summer. Prefer a cosier feel? An insulated tiled roof is a great alternative.

Maintenance tips for your glass roof

The good news is that a modern glass roof needs very little looking after.

Clean the glass with a soft brush and warm, soapy water. If you have self-cleaning glass, avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage its special coating. For your safety, it’s best to avoid standing or leaning on the roof and to work from the ground or a securely footed ladder instead.

It’s also a good idea to keep the gutters clear and check the seals and roof bar caps for wear once or twice a year. Opening windows or vents regularly will help reduce condensation too.
